LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS LAUNCH PLANT & GARDEN SHOP WITH BAR IN DOWNTOWN WAYNESVILLE

New Business to Open as Part of Historic Frog Level Revitalization

Waynesville, NC—May 2, 2023—Today, four local entrepreneurs announced the grand opening of Cultivate, a local plant and garden shop in the heart of Waynesville’s historic Frog Level district.

Cultivate seeks to serve the needs of today’s discerning gardener—apartment herb grower and large-scale market grower alike—and is a joint venture between existing Waynesville entrepreneurs Spencer and Courtney Tetrault, owners of Axe and Awl Leatherworks and Blake and Amanda Yoder, owners of Gooseneck Farm and Coda Wood Studio.

“Cultivate was born from the belief that growing food and tending to plant life makes us more connected to ourselves and one another in an increasingly disconnected and divisive world. Whether it’s by tending a large backyard garden or an indoor jungle, we want to provide our community access to the skills, resources, and tools they need to get their hands dirty and be reminded of what connects all of us—the ground beneath our feet and the soil in our hands,” said Amanda Yoder, Co-Founder, Cultivate Garden Shop.

Cultivate’s curated product line includes everyday gardening staples like soils, seeds, and plant starts from local organic partners like Dirtcraft Living Soils and The Farm Connection, to hard-to-find interior wares and specialized tools for the seasoned green thumb imported from Bulldog Tools in England and Niwaki in Japan. Cultivate has partnered with the MoMA Design Store in New York City to bring modern and unique gardening wares to the heart of western North Carolina. In addition to gardening wares, the store will stock a diverse array of high-quality houseplants, including ficus, philodendron, bird of paradise, and other varieties from the commonly sought-after to the unique and exotic.

“The opening of Cultivate Garden Shop in Haywood County is an event we have been looking forward to for months. As market gardeners, we are excited for the opportunity to source garden essentials from a locally owned company. From top quality seeds to soil mix and all of the necessities for the home garden, Cultivate provides everything the local grower needs to get started and help their garden thrive,” said Danielle Keeter, Waynesville local and owner of Mighty Gnome Market Garden.

In addition to stocking gardening supplies, Cultivate also has a bar in the back of their space, serving cold beer and cold not-beer, where they plan to host local events and workshops for the local community.

“Western North Carolina is steeped in rich agricultural history, and it’s exciting to see a new generation of gardeners bring their passions and tenacity for the natural world to the heart of Waynesville’s Frog Level neighborhood,” said Thomas Woltz, internationally-renowned landscape architect and member of the Downtown Waynesville Commission.

Cultivate is located at 250 Depot Street in Waynesville, North Carolina, and will open its doors for the first time during Frog Level’s Whole Bloomin’ Fest, operating from 9 AM - 6 PM on Saturday and Sunday, May 13 - 14, 2023.

After opening weekend, Cultivate will be open Wednesday - Friday, 11 AM - 6 PM, and on Saturday, 9 AM - 6 PM.
